The 2024 ʻIolani Palace ornament is inspired by a late 19^th century Royal Guard helmet plate, featuring the royal insignia of King Kalākaua surmounted by a crown.

The Royal Guard was established in 1810 by King Kamehameha I and included highly skilled warriors trained to protect and serve the Lāhui Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Nation). Between 1810 and 1893, under the Kamehameha and Kalākaua Dynasties, the Royal Guard continued to serve as the personal army of the mōʻī (king or queen) and was the only permanent military force of the sovereign Hawaiian nation.

The helmet plate was donated to The Friends of ʻIolani Palace in 1975 by Poʻomaikelani Kawānanakoa, great grandniece of King Kalākaua and Queen Kapiʽolani.
