2014 Queen Kapiʻolani Ornament

Queen Kapiʻolani, wife of King Kalākaua, was descended from high chiefs, and her maternal grandfather was the last king of Kauaʻi. She was born on December 31, 1834 and named Julia Kapiʻolani Napela-Kapu-O-Kakaʻe. She served as Queen of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi from 1874 to 1891 and is remember for her devotion to the health and welfare of the Hawaiian people. She established the Kapiʻolani Maternity Home, which survies today as the Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women and Children.

 

This personal emblem of Queen Kapiʻolani is a pair of interlocked Kʻs within a circular garter that bears the mottoe: Kulia i ka nuʻu (strive for the summit). The garter is surmounted by the crown of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi. This emblem appeared on her stationary during her reign a Queen.

This ornament is an exclusive ʻIolani Palace design.
